The physical construction went great, and I was able to get Win7 64-bit loaded on the first attempt. The major malfunction, however, came when I tried to trust windows to do the restoring file copies..

After three attempts at copying from Win7 to Win7 other both wired and wireless networks, I broke down and pulled out my Ubuntu laptop. Two clicks, and a 15-second automatic download from the repos later, my workbench looked like this:

The files then proceeded to transfer both speedily and easily. I’m really impressed with how easy I was able to set up a windows share in Ubuntu – and in how much more efficient the file transfer went as opposed to between the two Win7 machines.

I also discovered an annoying Ubuntu/Compiz papercut bug, in which compiz disables the ability to switch workspaces by scrolling mousewheel over the window switcher applet. Boo! Its also been open since about 2007, so I’m hoping somebody fixes it for 10.04. I miss my mousewheel!

So, after an incredibly brief foray with Parallels Desktop 4.0, I am fleeing back into the gracing comforts of VMware and Virtualbox.

From my brief experience in dealing both with Parallels partnership through the Canonical store, and the actual software itself, I am not impressed by the company or it’s user experience. Buggy. Difficult to install. Hard to download. In comparison to VMware/Virtualbox, that is.

On the ERP front, I have finally managed to get Oracle10g and IQ installed. Needed a database schema to fire it up, and just received that this evening around 4:00. We’ll have to see how it goes on Monday when I try to import the Schema and log in. Wahoo! Progress!

I’m going to go back to Virtualbox now, and try to get this WinXP image going. Then it’s into my stockpile of Lo-Carb Monster, and plowing through a text on DNS and BIND (my next area of linuxification at work – a subject which I may chart out in future bloggery).
